1. How do I move to different parts of the book?

The "Go to" menu provides a way of jumping to a particular part of the book. Pull down "Go to" from the Main Menu Bar, then select one of the following options:

2.How do I insert a bookmark?

Drag (click and hold) a paperclip from the Button Panel onto the text and release. The clip should attach to the left side of the screen, marking the current text position. Clicking the paperclip jumps to this text position. To remove the clip, drag it back to the paper clip icon on the Button Panel. Each Fascicle has a limit of 10 bookmarks.

3. How do I track chapters that have been opened and read?

The"History" button on the Button Panel lists the chapters of a book, in order, that have previously been opened during the current program session. Selecting a particular line on the "History" list jumps you to the corresponding chapter of the book.

4. How can I annotate the text?

Drag (click and hold) a note from the Button Panel onto the text and release. Enter text and save the note. The note icon appears on the right margin. To open the note, double-click the note icon. The note is deleted by dragging it back to Button Panel, or by double-clicking the icon and clicking the Delete button.

5. How do I magnify (zoom) an image?

Position the cursor over the image and double-click. The largest version of the image will appear. Close the image by clicking (EFMac) or double-clicking (EFWin) the gray box in the upper left-hand corner of its window. If the image is too large for the screen, you can scroll through it.

6. How do I find a particular chapter of the book?

To find a particular chapter, click [Chapter] on the Button Panel. This pop-up menu displays the Table of Contents. Double-click the chapter heading to load a particular chapter. Use the [Prev] or [Next] buttons (beneath the [Chapter] button) to move backward or forward, one chapter at a time, respectively, through the book.

7. How do I limit the scope of a "Search" to include just the reference or images?

Select "Search" on Main Menu Bar, select "New," and enter a single term or a Boolean string in the "Search for" box. Choose the portion of the document you wish to search:

8. How does the application find the results to my "Search" query so quickly?

Perhaps the most useful feature of this software is its Boolean searching capabilities. The ability to search an entire document for a word, or group of words, in just a few seconds is truly remarkable. It can provide this fast searching mechanism by maintaining full-text indexing tables (called inverted tables), which contain every word that appears in the book and where the word appears.

9. How do I view the results of a "Search" after I enter a term or a Boolean search string?

Click on the [Hits] button to see the results of the last search. If no search has been requested, you will be prompted to enter a search. After executing a single term or a Boolean text search, you can move forward or backward through the hits list by clicking the [Next] or [Prev] buttons, respectively, under the [Hits] button. The [Hits] button will summarize the total hits.

10. Why is some of the text blue?

Any text that appears "blue" indicates a hotspot. Hotspots are clickable areas of the screen that cause some action when clicked with the mouse. For example, numbers in parentheses usually represent entries in the Bibliography, so clicking a reference hotspot displays the full reference. Likewise, image numbers are hot-spots, and clicking causes a particular image to be displayed in the image window on the right. Another hotspot is the "See page xxx" referral. Clicking this hot- spot jumps to the particular page. Note that the [History] button will return to the previous place in the text.

11. How do I see the references for a particular chapter?

There are no references at the end of the chapter. References were separated from the main text so that searches could be done exclusively on references. In order to read the references, click the [Refs] button. This button toggles between the text and the references. To get back to the main text, click the [Text] button.

12. What is a citation search?

Citations in the book appear as parenthesized numbers, e.g., (2,4,15). A "citation search" enables the user to find the places in the text where a particular reference is cited.

You can perform a citation search by selecting a particular reference, highlighting some of its text, and choosing "Search" from the Main Menu Bar then "Citation."

13.When there is a page hotspot that refers to another part of the book, how can I jump there and then return to where I was?

Whenever there is a page hotspot to move to another page in the book, you can jump there by clicking on the hotspot. For example, if the text refers to a topic on page 207,

you simply click on the blue hotspot. To get back to your previous position and continue where you were, click on the [History] button in the Button Panel and choose the last line. This button displays your previous locations in the book.

14. How do I save text to the Clipboard or to a file?

Text can be saved to the Clipboard or to files. This is called Exporting. Only text that has been highlighted by the user can be exported.

To select text, use the mouse to click and drag (hold down the mouse button while dragging the mouse) through the region of text you wish to export. To select the entire chapter of text, pull down the "File" item from the Main Menu Bar and choose Select All from the menu.

After a region of text has been selected, you can export the text to the Clipboard by pressing the clipboard button [Clip] (located at the end of the Button Panel). Exporting text to the Clipboard replaces the previous contents of the Clipboard with the information you have highlighted.

You can export text to a file by pulling down "File" from the Main Menu bar, and selecting "Export." Choose "File" from the choices displayed and enter your chosen name for the file in the edit box. Pressing the [OK] button for EFWin or [Save] for EFMac creates the file.

Remember, exporting text to the Clipboard replaces previously exported text, but exporting text to a file appends highlighted text to the file. Following an export to a file, the [Clip] button on the Button Panel changes to a file icon. This indicates that pressing it will append the selected text to a file rather than replace previous text on the Clipboard.

To change this button back to a clipboard icon, pull down the "File" item on the Main Menu bar and select "Export." Then click on the "Clipboard" option.

You cannot print directly from the text. In order to print, export the text to a file and print the file.

15. How do I quit the application?

To quit and close down the present session, pull down the "File" Main Menu item and select "Exit" (EFWin) or "Quit" (EFMac).

A faster way to quit is to double-click the gray box in the upper left-hand corner of the Electronic Fascicle window (EFWin) or to press "Command + Q" (EFMac). Text that has been exported to the Clipboard remains available after exiting.

In many cases, you will want to close the application temporarily while you work with a different application. In this case, do not EXIT the book -- to do so loses your current environment (the current chapter you're reading, the current "Search" query, etc.) and to return will require reloading the application and data files.

Instead click the downward-pointing arrowhead in the gray box at the upper right-hand corner of the window. This closes the Electronic Fascicle window, reducing it to a microscopic icon at the bottom of your computer screen; you can then run other programs from Windows. When you are ready to start the Electronic Fascicle, simply double-click the microscopic icon at the bottom of your screen (EFWin only).

16. The images look terrible. What's wrong?

These images will display poorly on a VGA card that can only show 16 colors. For the images to look their best, they require a card with 256 colors -- Super VGA card. Check with your computer dealer to see if you need a new video card, or if you only need to install a different software video driver.

17. I keep getting a "File not Found" message. What does this mean?

This usually means that the application cannot find the images. Check to make sure that you've inserted the correct CD into the drive.

18. How do I stop the application from scrolling text with images?

By default, text and images scroll together. In other words, the images follow scrolling text, and the text will try to adjust to scrolling images. This prevents you from having to manage two different scrolling windows. You decide which window to scroll, and the other simply follows along.

There may be circumstances under which you would like to turn this automation off. This can be done by clicking on one (or both) of the following options. First pull down "File" from the Main Menu Bar, then click on Preferences. Click on the box or text you wish to change.

19. How do I access on-line help?

Most of the information presented here is available on-line for Windows. To access the on-line help, select the Help menu item from the Main Menu Bar. Macintosh users can view a MacHelp file in the README folder.

20. What is a "Boolean search string"?

A Boolean text string (BTS) consists of one or more words separated by Boolean operators -- AND, OR, and NOT represented by &, |, and ^, respectively, in search strings created by the user. (See item 1, page 16.)

21. What is the Clipboard?

The Clipboard is a temporary storage location enabling you to cut, copy, and paste selections of text between applications.

22. What is a "scroll bar"?

A scroll bar is a mechanism that appears at the right and/or bottom edge of the window or list box whose contents are not completely visible. Each scroll bar contains two scroll arrows and a scroll box, which enable you to scroll through the contents of the window or list box by clicking the arrows or clicking and dragging the box.

Clicking on the scroll bar between the arrow and the box produces a page scroll, and clicking on an arrow box at either end of the scroll bar yields line-by-line scrolling.

23. What is a "thumbnail"?

A thumbnail is a miniaturization of an image, usually 64 x 96 pixels in size. Thumbnails are usually displayed in groups to enable previewing of multiple images. Double-clicking on interesting prospects displays intermediate magnifications with the associated text. To view thumbnails, choose "Thumbnails" from the "Go to" menu.

24. How do I uninstall the application?

If you are using Windows 95; open Windows Explorer, select the Electronic Fascicle folder ("EF" by default), and choose Delete from the File menu or press DEL. If you also want to remove the Electronic Fascicle from the Start or Programs menu, click the Start button, point to Settings, click Taskbar, click the Start Menu Programs tab, click remove, locate the Electronic Fascicle, and click Remove.

If you are using Windows 3.1; open File Manager, select the Electronic Fascicle directory ("EF" by default), and choose Delete from the File menu or press DEL. If you also want to remove the Electronic Fascicle group, select the Electronic Fascicle group icon and choose Delete from the File menu or press DEL.

If you are using Mac; locate the Electronic Fascicle folder ("Electronic Fascicle" by default) and drag the folder to the Trash icon.

25. No books are listed when Open is selected from the File menu. What's wrong?

If you are using Mac, this can be extensions conflict. Open Extensions Manager in Control Panel, select System 7.x (or System 7.6 Base if you have System 8) from the Set pop-up menu, and then restart the computer. Open the Electronic Fascicle application and select Open from the File menu. If you can see the book volume(s), you may want to add one extension at a time to see which extension is conflicting.

26. My computer locks up while running the application. Why?

If you are using Mac, you may be running the application directly from CD-ROM. EFMac must be started from the hard drive. Make sure you installed the application properly and you double-click the "EFMac" icon in the Electronic Fascicle folder, not in the EFCD icon.

If you are using Windows, it may be conflict with TSR program(s). Disable TSR program such as virus protection and screen saver temporarily while running the Electronic Fascicle application. Then reboot the computer.

27. Why can't I magnify an image by double-clicking on it?

If you are using Mac, make sure the Caps Lock on the keyboard is unlocked.

28. Can I use the Electronic Fascicle over a network?

The application is not designed to use over a network. The Electronic Fascicle contains both U.S. Government work and copyrighted materials used with permission of non-Government contributors. Users of the Electronic Fascicle may not electronically transmit the copyrighted images from one computer to another or over a network without first obtaining permission from the copyright owners.

29. Can I use the images on CD-ROM?

The Electronic Fascicle contains both U.S. Government work and copyrighted materials used with permission of non-Government contributors. U.S. Government works may be used without restriction, but users of the Electronic Fascicle may not lawfully modify, rent, loan, distribute, create derivative works in whole or in part, or electronically transmit the copyrighted images from one computer to another or over a network without first obtaining permission from the copyright owners.

30. Why do I get the "Error: No books found" message?

You might have installed the application improperly. Reinstall the application. Make sure you click on a box under "Install" for each fascicle you want to install and then click "OK."
