ลักษณะรูปร่าง มีวงจรเริ่มจากระยะที่เป็น cocci หรือ rod โดย cocci อาจจะ germinate เป็น short rod เป็น filament มีกิ่งสั้นๆ ยื่นออกมาข้างเซลล์ มีลักษณะเป็น elementary branching ระยะต่อไป rod หรือ filament จะหักกลายเป็น cocci หรือ short rod เป็น partially acid fast ย้อมติดสี modified acid fast bacilli (MAFB)
